The President and CEO of TruGreen is recognized for bringing the discipline of turning around one of America’s most recognizable consumer brands to the country’s largest lawn care company, for a route-density growth strategy built on operational excellence rather than acquisitions, and for a leadership philosophy forged as the lowest-ranked player on his college tennis team.
HG HomeClub has named Kurt Kane, President and CEO of TruGreen, to its list of the 25 Most Influential Leaders in Home Improvement, Home Services and Outdoor Living.
The list, published by HG HomeClub, recognizes 25 leaders who are shaping these three industries in the right way. It spans manufacturing, distribution, retail, technology, franchising, contracting, media, capital and the associations that convene the trades. It is presented alphabetically and carries no numerical ranking, because the leaders on it exercise influence in fundamentally different ways, and comparing a keynote stage to a distribution network, or a franchise system to a product platform, would flatten what makes each of them consequential.
Kane earns his place on it as an outsider to the trades who brought a fast-food turnaround playbook to the outdoor living industry. TruGreen appointed Kane president and CEO effective immediately on November 6, 2023, succeeding John Cowles, bringing him to a company that, per its own Wikipedia entry, is the largest lawn care company in the United States, majority-owned by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee. “Kurt’s ‘people first’ leadership approach and commitment to innovative customer engagement will help TruGreen continue to deepen its associate and customer relationships across the neighborhoods we serve,” said John Compton, TruGreen chairman and an operating partner at Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, of the appointment.
Those are the numbers. The philosophy behind them traces back to a tennis court, and to an Army artillery unit, long before it ever reached a lawn.
An Artillery Officer Before He Was Ever a Marketer
Kane holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, and began his career as an Air Defense Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division. At West Point, Kane also played on the tennis team as, by his own account, its lowest-ranked recruit, an experience he has since turned into a recurring leadership message: “To elevate your game, stop protecting your spot and start improving it.”
From Sunny Delight to Doritos: Two Decades Building Consumer Brands
Before entering the restaurant industry, Kane spent nearly two decades in consumer packaged goods, beginning his business career at The Procter & Gamble Company from 1998 to 2001, where he led the repositioning of the Sunny Delight brand. He went on to lead Molson Coors Brewing Company’s seven-brand Molson portfolio for four years, reversing seven years of double-digit declines and making Molson the fastest-growing “Top 25” imported beer brand, then moved to Frito-Lay, where he led the reinvention of the Doritos brand.
Seven Years Turning Around Pizza Hut Across 95 Countries
In 2008, Kane joined Yum! Brands, holding several leadership positions for the Pizza Hut brand over seven years, including vice president of marketing, vice president of national marketing and communications, and U.S. chief marketing officer, before becoming Global Chief Marketing and Food Innovation Officer, leading strategy for the brand across 95 countries worldwide.
Turning Wendy’s Twitter Sass Into a Business Strategy
Wendy’s named Kane its Chief Concept Officer, effective May 4, 2015, a newly created role overseeing all North American marketing and innovation efforts, and by October of that year he had added Chief Marketing Officer to his title. Under his leadership, Wendy’s built its reputation for sharp, unfiltered social media, including the record-breaking #NuggsForCarter exchange, in which a teenager’s request for free chicken nuggets became the most-retweeted post of all time, and its 22 consecutive quarters of same-restaurant sales growth as of late 2018. “The brand was founded to challenge against the QSR industry and the QSR conventions,” Kane said of the strategy behind the brand’s social voice.
Promoted to Run the Entire U.S. Business
Wendy’s promoted Kane to President of its U.S. market and Chief Commercial Officer in May 2019, giving him direct accountability for the brand’s growth across the United States. In that role, Kane led all aspects of Wendy’s U.S. business, which grew to include nearly 5,900 restaurants and increased sales from $9 billion to $11 billion during his tenure, overseeing strategic plans that drove the highest same-restaurant sales growth achieved by the Wendy’s brand in more than 15 years.
A $750 Million Breakfast Bet That Landed in the Middle of a Pandemic
Kane’s most consequential single initiative was Wendy’s fifth attempt at cracking the breakfast daypart, launched in March 2020. “We were ready to go,” Kane told QSR Magazine of the launch, which came with roughly $20 million in pre-launch spending and about 20,000 new hires, just as COVID-19 began shutting down the restaurant industry nationwide. Despite the timing, the breakfast launch delivered approximately $750 million in incremental sales in its first year. Kane’s broader marketing work at Wendy’s also reversed declines in 21 key brand equity metrics and drove digital and social engagement that earned Wendy’s the “Digital Marketer of the Year” title from AdAge.
Choosing Route Density Over an Acquisition Spree
At TruGreen, Kane has steered the company’s growth strategy toward operational density rather than a roll-up of competitors. Rather than pursuing an M&A-led expansion common elsewhere in home services, his approach has emphasized field ride-alongs, localized franchise engagement and route efficiency, an “Own the Neighborhood” strategy built around serving existing territories more deeply before expanding into new ones. “All of the companies I have worked for are people-driven and very customer-focused, and that holds true here at TruGreen,” Kane told the National Association of Landscape Professionals in a Talking with Titans feature published in The Edge, the association’s official publication. “Culture is so important to how we work as an organization. Our culture operates as One Team Together.”
Extending TruGreen’s Deal With the PGA TOUR Through 2029
Under Kane, TruGreen has deepened its association with professional golf. In April 2026, the PGA TOUR and TruGreen announced an extension of their Official Marketing Partnership, first established in 2021, continuing TruGreen’s designation as the Official Lawn Care Treatment Provider of the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions and TPC Network through 2029. The extended deal built on TruGreen’s “Pros Trust Pros” campaign featuring PGA TOUR players Jason Day, Ben Griffin and Patton Kizzire, and included TruGreen’s continued status as a Trustee of First Tee, the TOUR-supported youth development organization that uses golf as a catalyst for personal growth.
A Personal Commitment to Foster Care and Adoption
Beyond TruGreen, Kane serves as a Trustee of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the nonprofit founded by Wendy’s namesake Dave Thomas that works to find permanent homes for children in foster care, a role he carried with him from his Wendy’s tenure into his current position at TruGreen.
Why Does Kurt Kane Belong Among the 25 Most Influential Leaders in These Industries?
Influence in these industries takes several forms. Some leaders influence through a keynote stage or a book. Some through a franchise system that creates business owners. Some through a distribution network, a software platform, or the price of a pallet.
Kurt Kane influences by importing big-brand discipline into a trade that has more often grown through acquisition than through operational reinvention. He spent nearly two decades building and turning around some of America’s most recognizable consumer brands, from Doritos to Pizza Hut to Wendy’s, where he helped grow U.S. systemwide sales from $9 billion to $11 billion and delivered the brand’s best same-restaurant sales growth in 15 years, before bringing that same people-first, density-focused playbook to the country’s largest lawn care company. Extending TruGreen’s PGA TOUR partnership through 2029 while keeping the company’s growth rooted in serving its existing neighborhoods better is exactly the kind of influence this list was created to recognize.
