The Chairman and CEO of SiteOne Landscape Supply is recognized for turning a private equity-owned division once branded under John Deere into North America’s largest wholesale distributor of landscape supplies and a publicly traded, multibillion-dollar enterprise, for a relentless acquisition strategy that continues into 2026, and for a football career at West Point that a Michie Stadium renovation now bears his name and money on.
HG HomeClub has named Doug Black, Chairman and CEO of SiteOne Landscape Supply, to its list of the 25 Most Influential Leaders in Home Improvement, Home Services and Outdoor Living.
The list, published by HG HomeClub, recognizes 25 leaders who are shaping these three industries in the right way. It spans manufacturing, distribution, retail, technology, franchising, contracting, media, capital and the associations that convene the trades. It is presented alphabetically and carries no numerical ranking, because the leaders on it exercise influence in fundamentally different ways, and comparing a keynote stage to a distribution network, or a franchise system to a product platform, would flatten what makes each of them consequential.
Black earns his place on it as the executive who rebuilt and scaled a company from a captive equipment-dealer channel into the industry’s dominant independent distributor. He has led SiteOne since April 2014, when the company still operated as John Deere Landscapes under private equity sponsor Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. Today, SiteOne operates more than 680 branches across North America and reported $4.54 billion in net sales for fiscal year 2024, up from roughly $1.6 billion the year it went public.
Those are the numbers. The name behind the branding change was Black’s idea of what the company needed to become, and the acquisitions have not stopped since.
An Army Officer Long Before He Was a Distribution Executive
Before business, there was the Army. Black served as a Construction/Engineer Officer in the United States Army from 1986 to 1990, completing construction projects in the southeastern United States, Central America and South America, and later served as a Captain in the Army Reserves. As a cadet at West Point, he was a Division I-A AP All-East selection for the Army Football Team, set Army’s single-season rushing record in 1984 with 1,148 yards, and received both the NCAA and National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete awards.
McKinsey and 18 Years at Oldcastle Built the Operating Playbook
Black began his business career in 1992 at McKinsey & Company, leading strategy, sales force effectiveness and plant improvement projects across the telecommunications, airline, lumber, paper and packaging industries. He joined Oldcastle Inc., a subsidiary of Ireland-based CRH plc, in 1995 as vice president of business development, and the following year helped create the Oldcastle Distribution Division through the acquisition of Allied Building Products. Over an 18-year career at Oldcastle, he rose through president of Oldcastle Precast Southeast Division, chief operating officer and later CEO of Oldcastle Architectural Inc., CEO of Oldcastle Materials, and ultimately President and Chief Operating Officer of Oldcastle Inc.
From John Deere’s Name to SiteOne’s Own Identity
Black joined the newly independent company in April 2014, after Clayton, Dubilier & Rice acquired a majority stake in John Deere Landscapes in December 2013, and set about giving the business its own identity. Following an 18-month branding process gathering input from associates, suppliers and customers, the company formally rebranded as SiteOne Landscape Supply on October 19, 2015, adopting the tagline “Stronger Together”, with more than 460 locations across the U.S. and Canada at the time. “As SiteOne, our vision is to leverage the passion and knowledge of our 2,700 dedicated associates, along with our commitment to excellence in product offerings and service delivery, to make our customers the most successful landscaping professionals in the green industry,” Black said at the time.
Taking SiteOne Public in 2016 Set Off a Decade of Consolidation
SiteOne completed its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange on May 17, 2016, pricing shares at $21.00 under the ticker SITE. The listing did not slow the company down; if anything, it accelerated the acquisition strategy Black had already been running. In the years since, SiteOne has completed dozens of acquisitions of regional landscape and hardscape distributors, and that pace has continued directly into 2026: the company completed its acquisition of Pioneer Landscape Centers, a 35-branch hardscapes and landscape supply distributor across Colorado and Arizona, in August 2023; acquired Reinders, a fifth-generation, family-owned distributor with 12 locations across Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Minnesota; and acquired Bourget Flagstone Co. in Santa Monica, California, in January 2026, its first acquisition of the year.
“For more than 55 years, Pioneer has built a strong business with talented associates, a strategic network of locations in high-growth markets and best-in-class delivery capability,” Black said of the Pioneer deal. “The combination of SiteOne and Pioneer makes us the clear market leader in Colorado and Arizona.”
Training the Contractors Who Buy From Him
Beyond acquisitions, Black has championed SiteOne University, a series of accredited training events offering green industry contractors seminars on business management, irrigation, hardscaping, lighting, pest control, agronomics and other technical categories. The program has run for years across multiple cities each winter and moved online in 2021, and SiteOne has partnered with the National Hispanic Landscape Alliance to deliver bilingual training designed to help smaller Hispanic-owned landscape contractors expand their businesses, part of a broader push that has drawn more than 1,500 contractors to a single year’s worth of virtual SiteOne University events.
A Decade of Industry Leadership Before SiteOne Existed
Black’s association leadership predates SiteOne. While still president and COO of Oldcastle, he was elected chairman of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) for the 2013-14 term, after years serving the association as senior vice chair, first vice chair, vice chair at-large, and president of its Materials & Services Division.
A $5 Million Gift Rebuilds the Stadium Where He Played
In 2021, Black and his wife, Joanne, made a $5 million gift to the U.S. Military Academy in support of the Michie Stadium Preservation Project, becoming one of seven cornerstone donors recognized at the project’s August 2024 groundbreaking, alongside fellow West Point graduates including Bill Foley and Anthony Noto. The Blacks are members of the Douglas MacArthur Lifetime Giving Society. Black also serves on the Board of Directors of the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, which supports veterans and military families through education and scholarships, and has previously served on the board of directors of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Why Does Doug Black Belong Among the 25 Most Influential Leaders in These Industries?
Influence in these industries takes several forms. Some leaders influence through a keynote stage or a book. Some through a franchise system that creates business owners. Some through a distribution network, a software platform, or the price of a pallet.
Doug Black influences through the physical infrastructure that gets landscape and outdoor living materials into contractors’ hands. He took a company still carrying another manufacturer’s brand and turned it into North America’s largest wholesale landscape distributor, a public company whose acquisition strategy has not slowed in more than a decade. Combined with a training program built to make his own customers more successful and a personal story of service, both military and philanthropic, that runs through nearly every chapter of his career, that is exactly the kind of influence this list was created to recognize.
